DIRT Report: Impact of Data Quality on Damage Analysis

In addition to an in-depth analysis of damage data submitted by CGA members, the 2021 DIRT Report highlights the critical impact that data quality has on accurate and complete damage data analysis. In this week’s Damage Prevention Download, we look at how higher quality data across all stakeholder groups is critical to identifying and focusing efforts on factors that have an impact on reducing damages.

2021 DIRT Report: A closer look at the most-damaged facility types

The recently released 2021 DIRT Report revealed that telecommunications and natural gas are the two types of facilities with the most reported damages last year, making up over 76% (36.8% and 39.8% respectively). To understand the circumstances that cause damages to these facilities to occur in such high volumes and to help reduce these incidents, the DIRT Report analyzes the telecom and natural gas industries in the section “Natural Gas vs. Telecom Facility Damages - A Closer Look.”

Natural gas and telecom facilities operate very differently and thus vary in how their damages occur. While the leading root cause group for natural gas facility damages is Excavation Practices, the leading root cause group for telecom is Locating Practices. Natural gas and telecom do have some of their top five root causes in common, however, including no locate request, failure to pothole/maintain clearance and insufficient excavation.

Data-informed strategies for targeting top damage root causes

In this week’s Damage Prevention Download, we’re taking a closer look at one of the 2021 DIRT Report’s recommendations: “Tailor damage prevention efforts and investments to address the leading individual root causes.”

According to 2021 DIRT data, more than 76% of damages are caused by just six root causes. Finding ways to tailor education and outreach to address these recurrent root causes is the industry’s most efficient path toward making progress in reducing our persistent rate of annual damages.

New CGA reports highlight mapping and better contracts as key to improving damage outcomes

This week, we’re taking a closer look at another key takeaway featured in CGA’s newest White Paper, “Natural Gas: Leading the Damage Prevention Industry.” Based on quantitative and qualitative natural gas stakeholder research, the third key takeaway in the White Paper notes that “improving locating through greater emphasis on mapping and fair contracts could help improve U.S. damage prevention as a whole.” Mapping and fair contracts are two opportunities identified by CGA’s Next Practices Initiative as having the potential to reduce damage incidents, and the need for greater adoption of these strategies is echoed in much of CGA’s primary research as well as the newly released 2021 DIRT Report.
