An effective damage prevention education program includes promoting the National One Call Number (811) and awareness campaign by communicating the number and “call before you dig” process to excavators and the general public.

Practice Description:

Practice Statement 8–1 identifies the need for a marketing plan and specifies that the plan include the promotion of the 811 number.

Stakeholder and marketing groups include the following:

  • One call notification centers
  • Owners and operators of underground facilities
  • Construction industry
  • Regulatory agencies

Product and services representatives from the one call industry actions that lead to a successful incorporation of 811 into your marketing plan include the following:

  • Inclusion of the 811 logo on Web sites and newsletters
  • Placing the 811 logo on owner/operator vehicles and equipment
  • TV and radio promotions and public service announcements
  • Billboard advertising
  • Inclusion of the 811 logo on products and in service promotions
